As Mexican farmers rely mainly on chemical pesticides to control corn pests, the amount of organophosphate pesticides used to control the maize worms is dramatically increasing. An expert group of Mexican researchers and crop consultants took three years to gather information and investigate the major pests that reduce maize production and the main methods used to control these pests. Researchers have found that the diversity of growing conditions is the single biggest obstacle for Mexico’s two million planted farmers in implementing a comprehensive pest and disease control plan, and many people own only two hectares or less of arable land. According to the survey, another obstacle is the lack of insect-resistant corn varieties, such as Bt hybrids.
