当寺转帖是寺院举行活动时用来通知全体僧众的类似于通知单的文书。上面列有被通知者的姓名,被通知者接到转帖后,在自己的姓名右下角写上“知”字或作上某种表示已知的记号,再“转”给下一个人。如此依次接力式下传,直到最后一个人,“转”回到发帖者手中。郝春文先生曾利用敦煌文献中保存的《当寺转帖》,对敦煌僧尼生活方式进行了突破性的研究。至于敦煌文书 P.4958背(3)《当寺转帖》的归属及年代似尚未有人措意。笔者不揣浅陋,拟对此作些考证。我们首先录文如下:
