  Plastic Surgery Mania
  Guangzhou Daily September 14
According to recent reports, many teenagers got plastic surgery during the summer vacation with the support of their parents, who are also blindly following the trend that’s generating a group of youth receiving plastic surgery at increasingly younger ages.
Modern plastic surgery can help people look better and gain more confidence, which is leading to its increased popularity. However, it should be noted that teenagers getting cosmetic surgery will face physical injuries and low selfesteem if a surgery goes wrong. Focusing too much on better looks will also distort their values.
The phenomenon has refl ected people’s fickleness in an ever-growing, fast-paced modern society. Since some hosts on livestreaming platforms have gained wide popularity after getting plastic surgery and several companies reportedly prefer to hire those with good looks, many teenagers are misguided into thinking that good looks lead to good jobs and cosmetic surgery is necessary for them to not lose a step at the starting line. Some parents even admit that they do not want their children to fall behind in terms of appearances.
In a bid to stop this mania, society should help teenagers develop rational concepts that improving their own abilities is the fundamental approach toward a better life. The government also needs to regulate the plastic surgery industry and crack down on unqualified hospitals. Only joint efforts including school education, social publicity and legal regulations can stop the cosmetic surgery mania by some teenagers and their parents. AI on the Rise In Healthcare
  Oriental Outlook September 13
Since 2015, Chinese firms have joined the tide of adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Some startup companies have begun to develop technologies and products for medical diagnostic imaging, pathological detection and intelligent inquiry. Meanwhile, Internet giants such as Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu are working on establishing open medical platforms and integrating more resources for the AI-based healthcare market.
With great investment potential, there has been a capital infl ow boost in the field as both the amount and the frequency of investment have grown exponentially since the second quarter of 2015, according to data from Yiou Think, a technology industry think tank.
Moreover, as AI technologies in healthcare advance, the implementation of applications has also accelerated. For example, most intelligent imaging-assisted diagnosing systems can analyze data and make a tentative diagnosis within 30 seconds. In addition, the accuracy of specialized AI products for pulmonary nodule screening hit 99 percent, higher than the average rate of doctors.
However, AI products in healthcare still face challenges in large-scale application. To realize their commercial value, AI products need to be more feasible, simple and compatible with the workflow of hospitals. Since there is a long way to go before AI can fully transform the traditi onal mode of healthcare, it is most likely that AI will play an assisting role in improving the accuracy of diagnoses and provide efficient services for disease control and health management.
  Sharing Economy at Crossroads
  People’s Daily September 17
In recent years, a sharing economy has emerged, growing rapidly in the form of shared bikes, cars, mobile chargers and umbrellas. However, the new economic form has also raised problems in terms of ensuring profitability, fulfilling corporate social responsibilities, protecting users’ legitimate rights, and guarding the safety of public data. After soaring growth, the sharing economy has entered a key phase of adjustment.
The boom of the sharing economy has propelled the integrated development of the Internet, economy and society; generated new business formats; and provided a great number of jobs, satisfying people’s evergrowing demands for a better life.
The new economy is not mired or decaying, but needs to explore suitable development modes. Its positive role as a new form of consumption should be valued, and the role of consumption should be given full play to drive economic development. To register sound development, enterprises engaged in the sharing economy should make more innovations to better meet consumers’ demands while undertaking their social responsibilities. They should also try to seek ways of staying profi table in the long term since enterprises ballooned by capital are not sustainable. In addition, regulators need to stop monopolies and create a fairer business environment with legal regulations.
