Caspase, a key homologous cysteine protease in mammalian apoptosis programs, specifically cleaves target proteins after aspartate residues. They degrade their substrates after waterfall activation, causing a series of cytoskeletal proteins and cell repair enzymes to be cleaved, leading to apoptosis.
