Our editorial department recently interviewed Zhang Guolong, a young painter from the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts who came back from Germany. He discussed his art activities in Germany and the status quo of the German fine arts. The following is a transcript based on the conversation. The title is added by the editor. Germany is a country with a developed economy and a prosperous culture. Its nationality is rational and good at speculation, resulting in philosophical giants such as Kant, Hegel and Marx. Before I went abroad, I was very interested in the traditional German art culture. I was especially interested in German expressionist painting and would like to make a deep study. In April 1991, I went to study at Goethe-Institut in Germany as a young painter in Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. Just arrived in Bonn, the greatest difficulty is the language barrier. It is not hard to imagine that a person with a keen interest in exploring the art culture of a strange country can not understand the rich artistic and cultural connotation of the country because of the language barrier and the solitude and silence all along
