1952年利贝(Libby)发表了他的名著“放射性碳年代测定”以来,该法的原理已逐渐被人们所了解。碳十四断代法是精度较高、准确度较好的放射性同位素年代法之一。目前能用它测定四万年内的含碳地质标本的年代,故在考古、晚第四纪地质、古脊椎、古地理、古气候、海洋、土壤等科研中得到广泛应用。并已应用于地下水、冰川、盐湖、新构造运动、环境保护及大气污染研究等领域。近年来配合岩溶地质研究,也开展了碳十四年代测定工作,取得了一些有用的信息。
