When it comes to the most special ecological community in its architecture, it must be Sieben Linden in Germany. Sieben Linden is also called “Seven Lindens”, which has an interesting origin. The owner of real estate showed people an old landscape picture, in which there were seven tall and big lindens -- in German folk culture, linden was regarded as the representative of concerted efforts. People thought it symbolized good luck, and then used “Seven Lindens” as the name of ecological community.
Sieben Linden is located in Altmark in Eastern Germany with an area of 81.5 hectares, half of which is the forest. Since 1997, the first year those environmentalists arrived here, up to today there have been 270 members. They created a model of sustainable life for other people to follow and made the residents in the community closely related.
In Sieben Linden, there is no reinforced concrete and no chemical synthesis. Everything is the gift of nature. Diversification of local natural environment makes the residents more simple and rapid in self-sufficiency. People's daily diets are organic vegetables and fruits, even contain some herbal medicine. In the community, there are groundwater resources of good quality. Every family has their own wells. The water is quite sweet. In addition, in order to fulfill the obligations, the residents have to install a central filtering system. Waste water from bathing, washing and the kitchen will be purified in the equipment and be used for crop irrigation after treatment.
In the use of energy, the heating of the room was provided by the central heating system. Firewood timber is cut down by the forest nearby or bought. The energy of hot water system is from solar energy equipment that can absorb solar energy. The luminous energy equipment produces far more energy than that needed in the village in a year. Excess electricity is stored in the public power grid system, and provided by the green electricity supplier -- "green peace" to nearby areas and to promote the development of cyclic utilization. Cooking fuel uses propane from liquefied gas storage tanks. Its raw materials mainly come from the rotten decaying organic kitchen waste, the rotten garden plants, grass and farmland.
Sieben Linden has another initiative -- the residents here built the first multilayer straw house in Germany, which is also the first three-layer straw house in Germany. There are all kinds of different rooms inside the building and it can provide living space for about 20 people.
