Because of the 16 million enthusiastic philatelics in the United States, it is not hard for the postal department to make money. In 1978, the United States sold 67 million commemorative stamps for as much as 87.7 million U.S. dollars, of which 86 million were net profits. Because many philatelic collectors save the new stamps, this eliminates the considerable postal costs of the postal service. Each year, the United States Postal Service produces about 30 sets of commemorative stamps on 15 to 20 different themes. As of 1979, twenty-five sets of stamps were issued from the architecture of the United States to Martin Luther King’s 13 different topics of watching dogs.
