As well as housing many culturalmonuments, every autumn Pingyaoholds the Pingyao International Pho-tography Festival. The ostentatiousresidential complexes of old businesstycoons, the architectural footprints of aformer financial hub, and a network ofunique alleyways is full of opportunitiesfor works of light and shadow. From itsinception in 2002 the event has been agreat hit and has attracted internation-ally renowned photographers and orga-nizers of major European photographyfestivals, growing into one of China'smost influential cultural events.
