20世纪的中国画坛经历了两次大的思潮。第一次思潮是在“五四”期间,以康有为、蔡元培、徐悲鸿等为代表,提倡从“造型观’入手,企图以西方的艺术观念来改造中国画,引导中国画向一种“科学”、“精确”的方向发展,这在中国人物画坛留下了深刻的影响。另一次是20世纪80年代改革开放以后,西方的现代、后现代思潮猛烈地冲击了中国画坛,从而使中国画经历了一次巨大的生存危机。这次思潮是以反写实主义为特色的,与西方的现代流派有关,这同样对中国人物画产生深刻的影响。
