Using a laser instead of a scalpel, eye surgeons can perform more sophisticated surgery. Now, laser chemists have extended their surgical techniques to breaking chemical bonds and controlling chemical reactions. R.N. Zare of Stanford University and his colleagues have shown that they can excite water molecules and break at specific sites. Initially, an infrared laser was used to vibrate a bond of water molecules and then bombarded with other hydrogen atoms to knock down the hydrogen atoms of the molecule. It has been reported that another group introduced the theoretical basis of using laser to make left-handed or right-handed mirror image molecules. P. Erumer of the University of Toronto said that “coherent chemistry” may have important implications for drug development.
