在唐宋禅宗文献里大量出现的“只如”是一个介词,其作用是引进一个谈话的起点。从信息结构的角度看,这个谈话的起点属于已知信息,或者在上文中已经出现,或者为交际双方所熟知。叙述者或说话人用“只如”提取或承接这个旧信息,并作为话题进行陈述或发问。介词“只如”来源于“就像”义的同形短语,大概出现于隋代,汉译佛经是其凝固和虚化的重要土壤。“只如”产生以后在唐宋禅家和俗家文献里都大量使用,在疑问句和陈述句中均可出现,口语性很强。它在唐宋时代使用频率极高,但到元明汉语里已经基本消失,具有鲜明的时代性。
