Art is beyond art. Politics, economy and culture have always been a closely integrated and interacting whole. Only when we consider it in the structure of political economy can we see the essence of the culture. With the 1979 “Star Art Exhibition” as a clear indication, from the moment of its appearance, Chinese contemporary art has been closely linked with the ups and downs of the development of Chinese society. Unlike the history of western modern and contemporary art, which experienced a thoroughgoing opening to the world after its flourishing formalism, it is impossible for Chinese contemporary art to proceed in an orderly manner, starting from modernism and in a linear manner.
