Researchers at the University of Southern California School of Medicine have developed an early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer called the “Fluorescence in Light” method. The law is a combination of chemistry and laser effects. Doctors inject a hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) into the patient. HPDs have useful properties that accumulate in cancer cells and are ejected by healthy cells. The HPD fluoresces when irradiated with the violet light generated by the laser, allowing the physician to see the cancerous tissue; HPD becomes toxic when irradiated with the red laser light and destroys HPD-rich cells.
