The Vrancea earthquake area in Romania is one of the areas on the mainland where moderate-deep seismic activity related to plate collision and reduction occurred. This paper presents the results of applying seismic tomography to the study of deep velocity structures in the area. In the study, the arrival time data of 433 shallow and middle-deep earthquakes recorded by local and regional seismostats were used to inversely solve the three-dimensional velocity structure up to 200 km in length. The effective three-dimensional ray tracing technique is used in the calculation of traveltime and ray paths, and the LSQR algorithm is used in the inversion. Seismic tomographic images of high resolution reveal a wide range of inhomogeneities in velocity structure. The results show that seismic tomography is a powerful tool for studying the geodynamics of the continent.
