Objective To investigate the clinical significance of serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) level in neonatal asphyxia brain injury. Methods The levels of serum IGF-1 in acute and convalescent neonates of 46 asphyxiated neonates were measured by electrochemiluminescence and compared with 15 normal neonates. Results The level of IGF-1 in the blood of the asphyxia neonatorum was decreased and the recovery period was recovered. Compared with the normal control group, the difference was significant (P <0.001). There was significant difference between the mild, moderate and severe children (P <0.001). Conclusion IGF-1 is an important protective factor in neonatal nervous system development and may be used as a sensitive indicator of neonatal brain injury in early stage. It may be related to the severity of neonatal asphyxia.
