For many years, researchers have been seeking explanations that cancer is caused by major changes in certain segments of DNA. These changes may be the rearrangement of cellular DNA caused by carcinogens, or the insertion of new genetic material caused by viruses. If certain genes do cause cancer, their isolation and sequencing and analysis of their protein products will lead to a complete understanding of cancer biology. Several advances in molecular biology have made this possible to become a reality. We are now able to excise certain fragments of DNA with restriction endonucleases, in a plasmid or phage vector
