北京大学考古文博学院教授、博士生导师齐东方先生曾经在接受《金融时报》的记者时说道:“金”具有重大经济价值,金币本位制在世界的统治地位长迟百余年。金的稀缺程度决定了它在经济生活中的最高地位。在金本位制下,每单位的货币价值等同于若干重量的黄金,不同国家使用金本位时,国家之间的汇率由它们各自货币的含金量之比来决定。直到今天仍被世界各国作为重要硬通货储备,是衡量国家实力的标志之一。其次,黄金延展性能好,耐腐蚀,光亮华丽,是制作精细艺术品的良好材料。从古至今都可以看到用金制造的精美的工艺品,在金器物作品上也凝聚了艺术家和工匠的才华智慧,而且影响了人们的审美和观念。一言以蔽之:在古代社会中,黄金体现了货币、赋税、赏赐、贡奉、赠送、施舍、悬赏、贿赂、赌博等多种功能,影响了社会政治、文化生活——黄金用天赋的色彩描写了生活的诗、历史的事。

In a word, in ancient society, gold embodies many functions such as money, tax, reward, contribution, donation, charity, rewards, bribery and gambling, affecting social, political and cultural life.
