在新感觉派里,施蜇存的小说与穆时英、刘呐鸥小说的区别是非常明显的,古典诗词的浸染,江南城镇的生长背景和相对深厚的传统文化根基,使得他在与城市摩登生活的关系上没有像都市新潮流的引领者穆时英、刘呐鸥那样能够入乎其里而出乎其外。其小说主要包括两部分,一是变态、怪异的心理小说,以弗洛伊德精神分析方式描绘男性主人公复杂、怪异的心理世界,带上了西方现代主义文学的鲜明印痕;一是写实的、私人生活范围内的日常心理分析叙事,中国化色彩较为鲜明。它们在汲取西方现代主义文学精华的同时又印上了中国传统文学的本土特色,在某种程度上避免了过分欧化和过分本土化的不良倾向,应和着东西方文化大交流、大碰撞的时代潮流,成为了西方现代主义中国化的典型样本。
