《逍遥游》以“谬悠之说,荒唐之言,无端崖之辞”,阐明了庄子一切听任自然的思想,创造了一个不受任何时间、空间限制的绝对自由的逍遥境界。文章的前半篇出现了三组形象:就形体而言,从硕大无比的鲲鹏,到渺小的蜩、鸴鸠、斥鷃,以至于微细的尘埃;就寿命而言,从长寿的冥灵、大椿,到短命的朝菌、蟪蛄;就修养而言,从忘却一切荣辱得失的宋荣子和御风而行的列子,到“知效一官,行比一乡,德合一君,而(能)征一国”小有所能的俗人,无不“犹有所待”,受到空间、时间、道德观念等等的限制,未能达到真正逍遥的境界。怎样才算真正逍遥的境界呢?文章在上述丰富多采的形象的基础上,引出了唯一的一小段议论:
