想要在脸孔、面具和肖像三者之间划清界线并非易事。德国艺术史学家贝尔廷(Hans Belting)在新著《相:脸的历史》(Faces.Eine Geschichte des Gesichts)中,尝试挑战这一任务。在他看来,人脸是世界上最有趣和最引人注目的立面。人的内在性格和感受,都会在面部显露出来。贝尔廷的观察,与佛教“相由心生”的理念有共通之处。他认为,“面相”的变化具有时空性,肖像只能表达个体在某一时空阶段的内在状况,而非个体的全部人格和真实存在。
It is not easy to draw a line between faces, masks and portraits. Hans Belting, the German art historian, tries to challenge this task in his new book FacesEine Geschichte des Gesichts. In his opinion, the face is the most interesting and eye-catching facade in the world. People’s inner personality and feelings, will be revealed in the face. Bertin’s observation has something in common with the Buddhist concept of “sharing one’s heart and soul.” In his opinion, the change of “face ” has the property of time and space. The portrait can only express the internal state of an individual in a certain space-time stage, rather than all the individual’s personality and real existence.
