磨矿机中的磨细作用是通过介质实现的,介质的充填率及尺寸配比是否恰当自然是重要关键,但形状的适宜与否也是不可忽视的另一重要因素。在长期磨矿实践中,人们曾作过种类繁多的介质形状研究,除现今广为采用的球和棒外,还有立方体、多角体、月牙形体、园锥体、短园柱体、异形体及金属碎块等。研究的结果,由于球和棒的效果最好,又便于供应,而被确定为最好的介质形状,所以就毫无选择地沿用至今。对于单位体积的介质而言,球的表面比棒大,因此认为棒只适合粗磨而不适于细磨,而球则既适于粗磨又适合细磨。
