There are three simple but irresistible passions that governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, the compassion for human suffering. The three kinds of passion blowing like a gust of wind, floating around me, swept across the sea of pain, I reached the edge of despair. First of all, I seek love because of the joy it brings - so delightful that I would rather sacrifice everything else in my life for such hours of joy. Second, I search for love because love can expel loneliness - the dreaded loneliness of seeing the edge of the world in the soberness of the tremor and seeing the depths of the dead, the icy bottomless. Finally, I look for love because, in the union of love, I see a mystical microcosm of the imagined paradise that the saints and poets have outlined. This is what I looked for. Although this may not be possible in human life, this is what I finally found.
