On May 7, 1981, we invited Professor Sidney M. Hecht, Director of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia in the United States, to give an academic report titled “Total Synthesis of Bleomycin” at Beijing Friendship Hotel. Professor Hecht visited China at the invitation of Professor Wang Xu, director of the department of pharmacy at Beijing Medical College. Bleomycin (BLM) is a class of anti-cancer antibiotics extracted from the culture of Streptomyces Vesticillus.
