On June 3, 1998, the German ICE884 high-speed train bound for Hamburg from Munich ran into the most devastating train derailment on the German Railways following the World War II in Eschende, a small town northeast of Hanover. The train consisted of two motor vehicles and 12 trailers. All 12 trailers were derailed. As of June 17, 100 people were killed and 88 were seriously injured. The accident train was the first generation of ICE1 high-speed trains in Germany. There are 60 such trains in Germany and it has been in operation since 1991 with a total operating mileage of over 1 billion km and an average mileage of 1.61 million km per train.
