梅州地区是我国著名侨乡之一,素有“华侨之乡”的美誉。由于封建、半封建社会压迫、剥削重,社会生产力落后,民不聊生等历史原因,加上梅州地区靠近我国东南沿海的有利地理位置,梅州客家人移居国外的历史相当悠久,一般认为,早在18世纪70年代,就开辟了一代客家人移居海外谋生的社会风气,但客家人大量远涉重洋谋生的是在鸦片战争之后。据《广东侨报》1989年5月9日载:当今梅州客家华侨和华人有200多万人。另据《嘉应侨史》1988年7月创刊号发表的统计资料,当今梅州客家华侨和华人有169万余人,(不包括港澳同胞34万余人)。在这众多的华侨、华人中,主要分布在泰国、印尼、马来西亚、新加坡、越南、印度等东南亚10国,且已形成稳定的
