The shuttle outer tank, consisting of a liquid oxygen box, a box structure and a liquid hydrogen tank, is a single-use configuration that uses 8.5 minutes per launch. This article describes the installation of a liquid oxygen tank-tank compartment for a 12-man lunar lifeboat. The program takes advantage of existing structures and access to manways and equipment without compromising the integrity of the tank structure. Resident rooms, equipment, environmental controls, life support facilities, thermal controls and propulsion systems are all installed in the space station Liberty, and the unmanned lifebelt is then transported to the low lunar orbit and soft-landed on the Moon’s own surface. Design studies show that this scheme was viable by the year 2000, due to the simultaneous development of spaceflight aircraft and manned cargo lander round-trip and re-supply of spacecraft personnel.
