Public transport in São Paulo city includes buses, trolley buses, city railways and underground railways. The city’s first metro line, which is about 7.5km long and has seven stations, was opened on September 14, 1974. By the mid-1990s, three lines 1, 2, and 3 with a total length of 43.6km were opened. Among them, 24.5km (56.2%) are underground, 5.5km (12.6%) are on the viaduct, and the remaining 13.6km (31.2%) are on the ground. There are 41 stations on the three lines, of which two are interchange stations with an average station spacing of 1.09km. Twenty-four of these stations are in tunnels, seven are on viaducts and the rest are ground stations.
