A concept of a continuously variable power split transmission is proposed for automotive applications. The device consists of a combination of two variable speed pulleys (transmission) and a planetary gear system called a sun gear and a ring gear three rotating member. “Power split” arrangement is characterized by the input shaft at the same time the power is transmitted to the sun gear and drive pulley, and through the transmission to the planetary gear transmission ring gear. Because the input power delivered by the input shaft is split into two (transmitted to the sun gear and drive pulley), the transmission only passes a fraction of the total power flow to the input shaft and the third rotating member (boom) of the planetary gear train collects The power flow from the ring gear and the sun gear transmits the total power to the output shaft and reaches the vehicle. This feature increases the engine power range permitted for automotive applications, and this feature reduces powertrain related power losses especially when providing a continuously variable transmission ratio range for low speed-high torque conditions. A so-called “gain factor” is established, which is used to determine the magnitude of the two components of the total power flow through the transmission’s variable speed element and speed ratio intervals. An external gearbox expands the CVT range within the optimum range of the engine and transmission. A design procedure for a continuously variable transmission range using an externally geared stepped gear (synchrotron) to achieve an effective gear ratio interval was proposed for use in a vehicle that operates in the optimum range between the engine and the transmission
