Trapped ions are currently one of the most promising systems for accomplishing quantum information processing (QIP).[1] Up to now,fourteen ions have been confined in the trap in entanglement[2] and both initialization[3] and read-out[4] of the inteal electronic states of the ions have been successfully demonstrated.The remarkable features of the trapped ion system include the extremely long coherence time[5]and highly efficient readout.[6] It is considered that the scalable ion-trap architecture should be an array of interconnected ion traps,or say,a multi-zone ion trap,satisfying all the DiVincenzo criteria.[7] Such architectures could be of different configurations for the qubits shuttling.Recent experiments have demonstrated the possibility of the basic QIP operations and ion movement in multi-zone traps with configurations such as straight lines[8] and T-shaped,[9] X-shaped[10] and Yshaped junctions.[11] However,it is still very challenging to scale such architectures up to involvement of thousands of qubits.
