Total nucleic acid, RNA and per-cell RNA content per wheat increased with embryonic development and reached its peak 21 days after flowering. The protein content per embryo and per cell also increased accordingly, but the protein content per embryo increased until 24 days after flowering. The amount of RNA per milligram of embryo dry weight decreased early in embryogenesis and increased in later stages, with a corresponding change in protein content per milligram of embryo dry weight. The DNA content of each embryo increased early in embryo development but remained relatively stable thereafter. The authors discuss the relationship between changes in RNA content and cellular protein synthesis and embryonic development.
