托马斯·希尔是环境美德伦理学领域里举足轻重的人物,其主要的环境美德理论思想是“恰当的谦逊”理论。“恰当的谦逊”是衡量事物重要性的一种态度,它要求人们承认“没有知觉的自然”的重要性,正确地理解自己在自然界中的位置。托马斯·希尔希望人们克服自负和无知,以拥有“恰当的谦逊”。但是,他在论证自己的理论时却呈现出人类中心主义倾向,并且存在阐述不充分的缺陷,因此受到了人们的批评。尽管如此,他的理论对环境保护仍然具有重要的启示意义。
Thomas Hill is a pivotal figure in the field of ethics of environmental virtues. His main idea of environmental virtues is “Appropriate Humbleness ”. “Proper humbleness ” is a measure of the importance of things, which requires people to recognize the importance of “unconscious nature ” and correctly understand their place in nature. Thomas Hill wants people to overcome their ego and ignorance to have “modest modesty.” However, when he argues his theory, he shows the tendency of anthropocentrism, and he has some flaws of inadequate explication. Therefore, he has been criticized. In spite of this, his theory still has important implications for environmental protection.
