This patent provides a way to distinguish the target boundary and the target itself from its background. In this method, electromagnetic radiation is detected from a field of view that roughly spans the target boundary and the background near the target boundary. The detected electromagnetic radiation image is superimposed on the detector. The method includes associating a spatial transition of the intensity of the image superimposed on the detector with a boundary of the target. When used to determine the attitude of a satellite relative to Earth, the detector is a thermal infrared detector so it clearly shows the contrast between the Earth’s heat emission and the cold space.
