A review of spectrophotometric determination of thorium, Savvin and Florence, suggests that arsenazo III is a good reagent for the determination of thorium. In 4-9N HCl medium, thorium forms a green complex with arsenazo III with a molar extinction coefficient of 1.3 × 10 -5, but uranium, rare earth and titanium severely interfere with the determination. Following the arsenazo III, there are p-acetyl arsenazo, m-sulfonated chlorophosphonazo, azo nitronazo-mN, tribromoarsenazo, p-bromophosphoramidite and so on. The spectrophotometric determination of thorium, uranium, zirconium, titanium with these reagents have increased to varying degrees, but the interference of rare earth is still more serious.
