Objective To investigate the change of pancreatic volume in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at different ages and to provide a new method for the evaluation of type 2 diabetes in clinical practice. Methods Fifty patients with type 2 diabetes from 41 to 50 years old, 51 to 60 years old, 61 to 70 years old and 71 years old and above were enrolled in this study. Fifty cases of non-diabetic adults of different ages were enrolled in this study. The three-dimensional color ultrasound system was used to measure the pancreatic volume measuring. Results The blood glucose and blood lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes were higher than those in non-diabetic patients. The volume of pancreas in patients with type 2 diabetes was significantly smaller than that of non-diabetic patients in the age groups of 41-50 years and 51-60 years (P <0.05). After 61 years of age there was no difference between the two groups (P> 0.05). The volume of male pancreas was significantly larger than that of female (P <0.05). Conclusions After the age of 41, the pancreas began to shrink gradually in adults, reaching stable after 61 years of age. Pancreatic atrophy in type 2 diabetic patients occurred earlier than non-diabetic patients.
