１９９４年时发病虾池中死亡蟹的胃、肠和肝胰腺进行了电镜观察，发现肠组织细胞核中有大量具囊膜的杆状病毒粒子，大小为２５０×３１０×７５纳米。初步观察了蟹在虾池中的活动情况，并分析了蟹病毒传播途径的可能性。
