在叔本华看来只有天才的想象力才能达到真正的直观,而语言作为构成概念的工具,其抽象的意义导致了对于直观的蒙蔽,故想象力和语言成为了一对矛盾。而在叶芝、科林伍德、史蒂文斯等文论家对叔本华的观念进行了批判的继承和创新,一方面,他们吸收了叔本华对于想象和直观的艺术观念,另一方面,他们一反叔本华对于语言的认识,对于艺术的形式因,语言、修辞等因素也给予了关注,从而使叔本华想象与语言之间的矛盾得到了解决,丰富了原有的艺术理论。
