The UN Food and Agriculture Organization released a report in May this year that the Mediterranean countries will face serious ecological problems in recent years due to the destruction of water resources and farmland caused by urban expansion and tourism development. The Mediterranean basin will face water shortages. This is especially true in North Africa and the Middle East. By 2000, five North African countries, such as Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, will face water shortages. Water scarcity can lead to conflicts among communal rivers in the Middle East. To this end, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization called on the Mediterranean countries to strengthen water conservation, the use of the salty groundwater, circulating water and desalination of the sea.
