This article describes a new instrument, the sliding micrometer produced in Switzerland, and its application in determining negative friction in piles. At present, the instrument is being used to measure the negative friction resistance and horizontal displacement of foundation steel pipe piles of a power plant in the eastern seashore of China. Eight months of observations indicate that the instrument is particularly suitable for long-term observation of various types of geotechnical engineering. Under the 4.6m high loading condition, the measured maximum axial force is about 800kN. Although it continues to increase, it increases by about 30kN every month. After three years, the limit value will be close to the value calculated by the effective stress formula; The bending stress in the pipe pile has exceeded the allowable stress and the horizontal displacement has reached more than 600 millimeters. This paper also compares the observation results with the soil settlement, surface horizontal displacement and pore water pressure data.
