在传统的美学理论中,身体在审美经验中的作用一直受到忽视和贬低,因为审美经验被看作精神性的认识活动,而身体则被看作物质性存在,因此只能充当审美活动的对象和工具。生态美学的产生带来了身体作用的根本性提升,因为对于生态环境的鉴赏不是心灵对事物的认识活动,而是身体与环境之间的交流。作为生态环境的一部分,身体不再是一种纯粹的物质性存在,而是一种有灵性的物,这种灵化的身体不再是审美活动的对象和工具,而直接成了审美活动的主体。
