This article compares two examples of plagiarism: one is real (William Otisworth), one seemingly but actually not (John Dunden), illustrating that the essay writing is one of the early modern English writers Basic writing method. We must distinguish between theft and legal borrowing. Early modern writers invented their authorship by intelligently borrowing the authority of reading materials. When we consider the element of essay writing, early modern plagiarism is far more complex than it seems, and the definition of black and white in the Handbook of Modern Languages Association may not cover it. The discussion in this article will enhance our understanding of plagiarism and our understanding of early modern English writing.
