One of the earliest studies on the detailed microstructure of phase transitions in ferro-alloys was done by student Dr. Albert Suver, a PhD student at Harvard University (1928). This study describes the formation of Wei’s microstructure and martensite in iron-carbon alloys with a wide range of carbon contents and a wide range of cooling rates for heat treatment. A unique mercury bath quenching method is also described. This research has never been published completely. This paper cites some original photomicrographs and some of the original texts from this PhD dissertation and attempts to clarify and reinterpret us with our current understanding of the phase transitions of ferroalloys. The article also includes the historical background of China’s introduction of modern industry and science, as well as Zhou Zhihong’s personal memories of Professor Su Fo.
