石峡遗址位于广东省北部,五岭南坡。珠江支流之一——北江中上游,现属韶关市曲江区马坝镇。《通典》载:“韶关,春秋、战国时,皆楚地。秦属南海郡。二汉属桂阳郡。吴分置始兴郡,晋因之。宋改为广兴郡。齐又为始兴郡。大唐置韶州,或为始兴郡。领县六:始兴、曲江、仁化、浈昌、翁源、乐昌。”~①从地理位置分析,自古以来,曲江县(原县治在韶关市内,1966年迁到马坝镇)就是粤北连接赣、湘等地的天然水陆通道。大庾岭(又称梅岭)和摺岭均有关隘,南北可通山路。北江支流之一浈水,源自江西省信丰县石溪湾。另一支流武水源自湖南省临武县三峰岭,在韶关城汇合成北江,南流至三水市思贤滘与西江相通,进入珠江三角洲河网区。珠江三角洲原是一处多
