艾略特的poetic drama译作“诗体剧”要比“诗剧”更确切一些。因为诗体剧和诗一般的戏剧之间差别很大。“所有的诗都有发展为剧的趋势,所有的戏剧也都趋向于诗。”必须注意到这句话中所包含的“诗”各自的具体涵意。我认为戏剧所趋向的诗和诗歌作品所包含的诗并不完全相同,正如它们不同于小说或音乐中的诗一样。因此究竟诗体剧能否帮助戏剧更富于或更加靠近戏剧所趋向的诗,正是这一部分所要探讨的重要问题。“戏剧过去、将来都将靠人类的声音生存。”理想的戏剧的声音究竟该是什么样的呢?戏剧舞台的真正灵魂是什么呢?我们将从艾略特的剧作出发,来一一探讨这些问题。同时在此基础上,对艾略特的剧作做进一步的评价。
