The importance of adequate nitrogen fertilization of maize becomes more critical due to the excess nitrogen fertilizer in the environment. Excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer to maize hybrids results in nitrate contamination of groundwater because of their inability to utilize nitrogen (Schepers et al., 1987).
