虽然煤炭作为船运货物不象谷物那样有长长的历史,但是在中世纪已有了第一次煤运。当时煤运方式很奇特,人们把煤炭作为船舶压载物,在到达预定港口后再当作燃料使用掉。从这以后海上煤运促进了经济发展并长时间以来成为生产力发展状况的显示器。一百多年来,煤炭是主要产生能量的物资,是19、20世纪钢铁工业进步不可缺少的辅助料。煤炭虽有其局限性,但它到目前为止所起的作用以及工业化国家和工业发展中国家对其需求的地位已被确定。从目前已有的海运国家情况和将来还将扩大的使用范围来看,海运煤炭的未来还要重新认识。
Although coal, as a cargo of ships, does not have the long history of cereals, it has been the first coal shipped in the Middle Ages. At that time coal transport was peculiar, and people used coal as a ship ballast and used it as fuel after it reached a predetermined port.
