中央教育科学研究所编选的《叶圣陶语文教育论集》中,选进了叶圣陶先生不少篇关于作文教学的文章和讲话,对中、小学作文教学作了详尽而中肯的阐述。叶老在不少文章中谈到了写作源头的问题。他说:“写作材料的来源普遍于整个生活里,整个生活时时在那里向上发展,写作材料自会滔滔汩汩地无穷无尽地流注出来。”(见第356页)还说:“我们要记着,作文这件事离不开生活,生活充实到什么程度,才会做成什么文章。所以,论到根本,除了不间断地向着求充实的路走去,更没有可靠的方法。”因此,他主张,要写好作文,就“应该去寻到它的源头。”
