Objective To investigate the expression of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in peripheral blood of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and its correlation with prognosis. Methods The numbers of CD4 + CD25 + Treg, CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Treg in peripheral blood of 30 healthy subjects and 28 newly diagnosed CLL patients before and after treatment were detected by flow cytometry. Nineteen patients were followed up. Results The CD4 + CD25 + Treg in newly diagnosed CLL patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls (P <0.05). The CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Tregs in newly diagnosed CLL patients were significantly higher than those in the control group and those in the control group (P <0.05). After treatment, the levels of CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Treg were significantly higher than those in healthy controls (P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Treg and CD38 expression, β2 microglobulin expression, ZAP-70 positive expression, clinical Binet stage and Rai stage in newly diagnosed CLL patients. Conclusion CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + Treg may be used as an index to evaluate the progress, efficacy and prognosis of CLL patients.
