The presence of zinc in scrap increases the difficulty of steelmaking and can cause environmental pollution. This paper presents a separation of zinc impurities from scrap steel before smelting using a mixture of air and chlorine. Thermodynamics shows that zinc and chlorine compounds are more stable than zinc and oxygen compounds and iron is the opposite. In the experiment, a mixed gas of air and chlorine (10: 1) can effectively remove zinc impurities in steel at a temperature of 800 ℃. The results of the analysis of the reaction product characteristics by various analytical techniques further confirm the conclusion of the thermodynamics. This is a kind
