在宋元明时期出现的“多少料船”中的“料”字究竟是什么意思呢?通过对《南船纪》所载七艘战船主船体所用木料的统计分析,“料”确实是一个可以表示船舶大小档次的量,但并不是指建造船舶所用物料的多少,也不是指船的容积,更不是指船的载重量。其可能是指船体中纵剖面面积的大小,且1料计为1平方尺。这一看法是受古建筑“定侧样”的启发,并利用《南船纪》和《龙江船厂志》所载七艘战船的主要尺度进行测算而产生的。另外,“料”字的引申运用对于不同的对象在不同的情形下会有多种不同的含义,而且都有可能用之于船,应注意区分。
